It is also known by various other names such as Alzaytun, Zayt, Mafuta, Jaitun Ka Tel, and Olyf Olie in different parts of the world. According to archeological evidences use of olive oil dates back to thousands of years in this region. Owing to its high antioxidants contains consumption of olive oil can lower risk of cancer. However, consumption of adulterated olive oil can cause adverse health effects to the consumers is a factor can affect its usage.

It is also used or hair care as olive oil promotes hair growth, moisturized hair, and helps with the treatment for dandruff. Olive oil can be categorized into extra virgin olive oil, pure or blended olive oil, standard virgin oil, pomace oil, and refined oil. Extra Virgin Olive Oil is extracted by cold-pressing or crushing method. It is highest quality of olive oil as it retains not only naturally present vitamins and minerals but also taste of olives. Extra virgin olive oil is unrefined oil, with most health benefits.
Europe is major producer and consumer of olive oil. Spain is the world’s leading producer of olive oil, followed by Italy, Greece, and Tunisia. Favorable climatic conditions in countries in this region is a factor supporting growth of the cultivation of olive trees. There is an increasing demand for olive oil from North America, owing to increasing awareness regarding its health benefits among end users. There is increasing usage of olive oil in countries in Asia Pacific region, owing to increasing influence of western food culture.F
